Florida English Labrador Retrievers

Cedar Key Labradors is a small, AKC Breeder of Merit kennel in Central Florida producing show-bred Florida English Labrador Retrievers — the calm, lovable, broader-headed, and bigger-boned type of Lab most families picture when they think of the breed. Our program is built on health testing, conformation to the AKC breed standard, and temperaments suited to family life. In March 2026, a Cedar Key-bred chocolate, Sage (GCH CedarKey Back to Flo Rida @ Suebel), took Reserve CC at Crufts (the world’s largest dog show) from an entry of over 300 Labrador females. We recognize that not all puppies will become AKC Champions, so temperament, structure, and health are our foundations.

Our History with Florida English Labrador Retrievers

With our strong ties to the equine community, we have enjoyed bringing our Florida English Labrador Retrievers to horse events and in 2006 we entered the AKC Conformation events with Kimberwick Back in Black, “Diesel.” Diesel decided he like agility more than conformation, so his AKC modeling experience was limited. In 2015, “Bronson,” CH Tealwood Who Needs To Study (Tyric Tealwood’s Quick Study x Tealwood’s Add A Step To The Strutt) joined our house from Tealwood Kennel. “Bronson” is now an AKC champion winning several Owner-Handler Group placings with very limited showing.

So where did the Beagle connection come in? Well, on a trip to Westminster with Bronson, I received a request from a friend abroad that needed help getting a Beagle over to her international transporter. This was the start of my connection with Chaucer Kennels in the Philippines. Two years later, Philippine CH, Hall of Fame winner Chaucer Hadassah “Dassah” joined us in the US in May 2019. She quickly finished her AKC Championship and that was the start to our beagle connection.

English Labrador Retrievers vs. American Labrador Retrievers: What’s the Difference?

Before we get into the differences, a note on the terminology: the labels “English Lab” and “American Lab” are genuinely misleading. Neither name actually describes where the dog is from. You can find both styles of Labradors bred in England, the United States, Canada, and everywhere the breed lives. The words survived because they’re convenient, but they don’t tell the true story.

The more accurate terms are show-bred English Labrador Retriever (what most people call an “English Lab”) and field-bred Labrador (what most people call an “American Lab”). Both are the same breed (Labrador Retriever), registered under the same AKC standard. What differs is how they conform to the standard and what the breeder selected for over many generations, either the show ring and breed conformation or field-trial performance with a strong hunting drive.

Show-Bred English Labradors (the “English” type)

Show-bred English Labradors are selected to match the written AKC breed standard — the blueprint judges evaluate in the conformation ring. These dogs tend to be:

  • shorter and stockier, with heavier bone and a compact, well-balanced build
  • broader in hte skull with a defined stop between muzzle and forehead
  • equiped with the traditional thick “otter tail” and dense double coat
  • generally calmer (but not always!), more settled, and easier to live with in a family home
  • still capable of retrieving and working. Many show-bred Labradors earn performance titles as well

Field-Bred Labradors (the “American” type)

Field-bred Labs are selected for hunting performance and field trial competition. They are a working athlete first! These dogs tend to be:

  • taller, leaner, and rangier, with a more athletic build
  • narrower in the head with a longer, finer muzzle
  • lighter in coat and bone, built for speed and endurance in the field
  • significantly higher in drive, energy, and prey response
  • exceptionally well suited to serious hunting, field trial, and hunt test homes

Which Type is Right for You?

Neither type is better. They are bred for different purposes. A show-bred Florida English Labrador Retriever is typically (but not always) the better fit for families looking for a mellow, affectionate companion that can still enjoy a hike, a swim, and the game of fetch. A field-bred Labrador is the right choice for active hunting homes, competitive field-trial handlers, or high-energy households that want a canine athlete to train and work with daily.

At Cedar Key Labradors, we breed show-bred Florida English Labrador Retrievers to the AKC breed standard. Our dogs carry the broader heads, often referred to as “blocky”, heavier bone, thick coats, and calm, biddable temperaments that define the show-bred Lab. And they are, first and foremost, family dogs who happen to be successful in the show ring.

Our Breeding Program: A Testament to Quality

We believe that responsible breeding is the cornerstone of producing healthy, well-rounded dogs. Our breeding program revolves around several key principles:

  1. Health and Genetic Screening: We prioritize the health and well-being of our dogs. All our breeding dogs undergo comprehensive health screenings, including hip and elbow x-rays, echocardiograms, eye clearances, dilute gene testing, and tests for common genetic disorders, to ensure that we have the knowledge in hand prior to breeding.

  2. Temperament and Personality: We understand the importance of a Labrador Retriever’s temperament in creating lifelong companions. Our dogs possess the desirable traits of intelligence, trainability, and a friendly disposition.

  3. Ethical Practices: We adhere to high ethical standards in our breeding program. We carefully select suitable mates based on their genetic compatibility and strive to improve the breed with each generation. We prioritize the well-being of our dogs above all else. We are an AKC Breeder of Merit in both Labradors and Beagles.

  4. Early Socialization and Enrichment: We believe in providing a nurturing environment for our puppies from the moment they are born. Early socialization and mental stimulation play a vital role in shaping their development, ensuring they grow up to be confident and well-adjusted individuals.
