How Did We Get into Beagles?
It started at Westminster in February 2018, while I was showing my Labrador, Bronson, at the big event in New York City. I received a message from a handler asking if I could help out with a young Beagle who needed overnight accommodations — her transporter to Thailand wasn’t available. My sister was in the city with me, so we agreed to take her in for the night. The Beagle, Pearl, made fast friends with Bronson, and through her I met her owner, Leilani “Lani” Ayala Villorente of Chaucer Kennels in the Philippines. Lani was wonderful, and we were glad to give Pearl a comfortable 24 hours in New York before helping send her on her way to Thailand.
After the event, Lani kept us updated on Pearl’s show career in Thailand and Lani told me that the next time she came to the U.S., she was bringing me a Beagle. She was not exaggerating. On Memorial Day weekend in 2019, she arrived in New York City with Hadassah in hand. I had been so taken with the idea of a beagle that I’d already entered her in a show before I’d ever laid eyes on her. That first show was in Fishersville, Virginia, judged by two respected Beagle breeder-judges — and it was an honor to be awarded Winners Bitch under both of them. “Dassah” was the true start of this journey, and I remain forever grateful to Lani for the opportunity to bring her into our lives.
